Although a late comer to the U.S. Market, KIA was the oldest & second largest automotive manufacturer in South Korea. Established in 1944, KIA starting building vehicles under license from Mazda and importing them in 1986 (the Ford Aspire & the Festiva) through Ford dealerships.
After being incorporated in 1992, the first Sephia was imported and sold through KIA Dealerships on the West Coast in 1994. Even though KIA was successful in the U.S., in 1997 the company was facing bankruptcy and was purchased by Hyundai becoming South Korea's largest and oldest auto manufacturer.
Since 1994, KIA has recorded increased sales and market share each and every year culminating in 640 dealerships in the U.S. KIA has been named the official vehicle of the NBA - that will surely help in it's marketing.
